Andrew John Verkin

Andrew Andy J. Verkin, 93, of Genoa, Ohio, died Saturday, May 28, 2010, in Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg, Ohio. Andy was born in Monesson, PA, on December 3, 1916, to Michael and Mary Miklosko Verkin. He married Marie D. Valko on June 10, 1939, in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Genoa, Ohio, and she survives. Andy worked for the Libbey-Owens Ford Company for 45 years where he was a supervisor and glass cutter. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Genoa where he was a past member of the church council and past president of the Holy Name Society. Andy was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was past Grand Knight of the Oak Harbor Knights of Columbus #1944, First Grand Knight of Genoa Knights of Columbus Council #4237, and Past Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, DeSoto Assembly 805. He was a charter member of the Genoa Area Volunteer Fire Department. Andy was also former 1st Vice President and Wage committeeman of the Aluminum Brick and Glass Workers Union at the L-O-F Company, a member of the German Benevolent Union Retirees Club, and delivered meals on wheels for a period of time. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Marie, son, Edward J Elaine Verkin, grandchildren, Cindy Johnson, Kathy David Matts, Edward Deb Verkin, Jr., and Chris Tom Smit, great grandchildren, David and Derek Johnson, Heather, Chelsea, and Donny Matts, Adam, Tyler, Marissa, and Trey Verkin, great great grandchild, Aubree Verkin, sisters, Ann Jozwiak, Margy Don Smith, Maggie Johnson, and Millie Jim Evans. Andy was preceded in death by his parents, son Richard, brothers, Steve and Joseph Verkin, and sisters Mary Knurek, and Helen Meng. Visitation for Andy will be 2-8 p.m., Monday, May 31, 2010, in the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, Genoa, OH. A scripture service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home Monday evening, with a Knights of Columbus service to follow. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 1, 2010, in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Genoa, Ohio, where additional visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Interment will follow in the Clay Township Cemetery, Genoa. The family suggests that memorial contributions for Andy be directed to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Grotto Fund, or to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
