Andrew H. Schafer, age 42 of Sylvania passed away of pulmonary complications on Monday December 1, 2014 in The Toledo Hospital. He was born December 22, 1971 in Toledo to Gregory and Susan (Mittendorf) Schafer. Andrew was a 1990 graduate of DeVilbiss High School where he played basketball and held the rebounding record. He also played in the AAU and McDonalds All American Games. Then went on to play at the University of Toledo and soon after he married his high school sweetheart, Renee Grabarczyk, with whom he had two children. He was employed as a labor foreman at Mosser Construction where he was involved with larger construction projects like the Huntington Center and the restoration of downtown hotels. Andrew previously worked at Rudolph-Libbe. He retired due to his disability in 2009. Andrew coached football, baseball and girls basketball at Meadowvale School for his children. He loved all guns and target shooting, and created P.A.W.S. with his DHS friends. He also enjoyed cooking and was not afraid to experiment with recipes but most of all he enjoyed watching hockey. To all that knew him his kind and gentle nature dwarfed his size. He was a great father, uncle and man. He adored, and is survived by, his children Derek and Tabitha; parents Greg and Susan Schafer; brother Matthew Schafer; uncle Scott (Sylvia) Schafer; aunt Gretchen Norsen; his dogs Baxter and Ares; and a host of extended family. Friends may visit the family at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey) on Thursday from 5-8 PM and Friday from 1-4 PM and 5-8 PM. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 AM in Grace Lutheran Church, 4441 Monroe St., Toledo, Ohio where visitation will be one hour prior. Interment will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. The family suggests memorials to the church or to the Northview Hockey Program c/o Northview Hockey 4444 Bennett Rd. Toledo, Ohio 43612.
