RAKAY ANDREW J. Andrew J. Rakay age 80 of Toledo passed away Thursday, January 14, 2010 in The Toledo Hospital. He was born October 20, 1929 in Toledo to Andrew and Mary Rakay. Andy graduated from Waite High School and was a veteran of the US Army serving at the Pentagon for the Atomic Energy Commission. He was appointed to the Toledo Fire Department on February 16, 1960, promoted to Lieutenant in 1966, and Captain in 1971. Andy began his career with Fire Station 19 and also served stations 25, 4 and 18. He was also with Rescue Squads 1 and 7. He retired from Station 3 in February of 1982. After retirement he began a second career in real estate working for the former Arnold Company eventually becoming a licensed appraiser and opening up A.J. Rakay Appraisal Company. He was past president of Firefighters Local 92 and current president of the Firefighters Retirees Association. He was also very active in the police and fire State Pension Boards serving as treasurer. Andy was well respected by his peers and loved the fire department. He was longtime president of the Hungarian Club, a member of Toledo Sister Cities International and a founding member of the organizations Szeged Committee and a member of Toledo Sportsman Club. Andy was also president of Toledo International Boxing Club and a timekeeper for USA Boxing. Surviving is his daughter Cindy Rakay; brother John Ruth Rakay; sister Helen Richard Singlar; many nieces and nephews; and many, many beloved friends. Friends may call at the Walker Funeral Home 5155 Sylvania Ave, west of Corey on Sunday and Monday from 2-8 PM where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 AM. Interment will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. The Fire Department will conduct Last Alarm Services at 7 PM on Monday in the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the Firefighters Museum.
