Alvin F. Lewis

Alvin F. Lewis, age 84, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at Astor House Assisted Living. The son of Walter and Bernice Lewis, he was born April 27, 1926 in Toledo, OH. Al was a 1944 graduate of DeVilbiss High School where he played football, basketball, and track. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. Al trained at Parris Island and was assigned to a detachment on the Antietam Aircraft Carrier. In July 1946, he was discharged from the marines and enrolled at the University of Toledo where he played football. Al graduated from UT in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. On October 19, 1951, Al married his sweetie Carol J. Nelson. He was employed at Crane / Westburne Supply for 35 years as a Salesman and Branch Manager, retiring on March 30, 1990. Alvin loved sports and was an avid UT Rocket fan. He proudly wore his blue and gold and was a long time member of the UT Alumnae Association, Rocket Club and Varsity T Club. Al enjoyed the many family gatherings and vacations including trips to Myrtle Beach and Disney World. One of his favorite activities was attending athletic events, especially those of his children and grandchildren. He was a proud member of the Lew Crew and enjoyed watching his granddaughter, Stacy, this last summer play in the Jamie Farr Golf Tournament. He will be missed by his loving family; sons, Gary Gigi and Dale Carol Lewis; daughter, Kathy James Heil; grandchildren, Jennifer, Kelly, Bryan, and Sara Heil, Beth Tony Wysocki, Stacy, Janet, Jason, and Scott Lewis; great-grandchild, Cole Wysocki, sisters, Dorothy Lynn Ryan and Virginia Lewis. He was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife, sister, Adeline, and brother, Bob. The family would like to thank the staff at the Astor House and the Hospice of Northwest Ohio for all their loving care and support. Friends may visit the family on Tuesday from 3-9:00pm at the Walker Funeral Home 5155 Sylvania Ave west of Corey Rd. Funeral services will be held at Memorial Lutheran Church 3215 Douglas Rd Toledo, OH 43613 on Wednesday at 11:00am. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Stacy Lewis Scoliosis Research Society, the Astor House Spring Meadows, or the UT Varsity T Club.
