Alvin R. Ponch Cornell, 86, of Summerville, SC, husband of the late Emma Cornell, entered into eternity with his heavenly Father on Saturday, September 15, 2012. For most of his life, Alvin resided in Genoa, OH, where he and his wife raised their family. Later in life he lived with his son and family in North Charleston, SC, for five and a half years before moving to Royal Oaks Senior Care Center in Summerville, SC, for the last two years. Alvin was born March 19, 1926, in Martin, OH, the son of Edward and Leona Cornell. He was a veteran who served in the United States Navy and later retired from Diversified Material Handling as a certified forklift mechanic. Alvin was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Clay Center, OH, where he served as an elder. He loved to create things from wood with his hands and keep the bird feeders full while watching the several different types of birds that would visit. He loved his family, traveling and discovering new places, and dancing. Alvin is survived by his daughter, Laura Smith and husband Lesley of Summerville, SC, his son, Kevin K. Cornell and wife Mary of North Charleston, SC, his four grandchildren, Nickie Garbeil of Huntsville, AL, Megan Heid of North Charleston, SC, John T. Cornell of Goose Creek, SC, and Elizabeth Cornell of North Charleston, SC, as well as six great grandchildren. His funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 20, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church, Main St., in Clay Center. The family will receive friends at Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 501 West St., Genoa, OH, on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, from 5-8 p.m. Following the funeral service there will be a luncheon back at the church. Donations in memory of Alvin may be made to your local hospice facility.
