On June 6, 2011 Allen Roger Lewis, a long-time resident of Maumee, passed peacefully from this world surrounded by loving family. Allen was born on July 6, 1924 to Mildred and Paul Lewis of Deshler, Ohio. Allen graduated from Deshler High School with distinction and joined the Army in 1945. He served as a Radio Repairman with the 516th Signal Service Unit on Saipan and was honorably discharged in 1952. Allen returned to Northwest Ohio and married Janet Elaine Gilmore. He earned his BS of Education from Bowling Green State University in 1953 and a Masters of Arts in 1963 from Western Michigan University. Allen began his teaching career in Walled Lake, Michigan, and finished his career at Maumee High School where he taught Science from 1956 to 1979. Allens life was full of hobbies and interests including auto restoration, photography, camping, sailing, woodworking and travel. At various times in his life he visited Africa, Australia, the Middle East and Norway. Allen married Nancy Cubbedge of Maumee, Ohio in 1982. After retirement, Allens passion became volunteering at St. Pauls Episcopal and Maumee United Methodist Church. At St. Pauls he was a committed volunteer for the Alzheimers Respite Program. As a long-time member of Maumee United Methodist Church, Al gave tirelessly to the projects and organizations he loved there, including the Library and the PALS group. He was also involved in a church sponsorship of immigrants from Laos and had maintained interest in their lives until his passing. Allen was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nancy; brother, Earl and is survived by children Raymond Raykay of Lemarque, Texas; Kathleen Stanley Thacker of Houston, Texas; Eric Lisa of Centennial, Colorado; Brian Jenny of Maumee, OH; Neal Donna of Dearborn Heights, Michigan; and Greta Mitchell of Toledo, Ohio; grandchildren, Ian Lewis, Stacey Cole, Jessica and Justin Thacker, Kjerstin and Stephanie Lewis and Allison Mitchell; great-grandchildren Jack and Elliott Lewis; stepchildren Clarence, David and Ann Cubbedge, and former wife, Janet Lewis. A memorial service and celebration of Allens life will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Maumee United Methodist Church. Donations in lieu of flowers should be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
