Alice Joy Sutton Hummel

Alice Joy Hummel peacefully left this earth Wednesday morning, January 4 after a lengthy and courageous struggle with Alzheimer’s. Her compassionate and caring heart will be greatly missed by family and friends. Alice was born April 15, 1926 in Waterville, Ohio to Lawrence and Ruth Sutton. The oldest of three sisters, Alice was raised a “farm girl” where she learned the value of hard work, to love the land and the Maumee River. Alice graduated from Tontogany High School where she was very active and voted “The Most Likely to Succeed.” She began her teaching career at Liberty High on a provisional certificate during World War II. Shortly thereafter she married John Hummel in December 1951. They enjoyed 51 years together. While raising three children, Alice returned to college and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at Bowling Green State University. She taught at Union and Fort Miami in Maumee and Rossford, eventually retiring from Glenwood elementary school. Alice was also a talented musician. She loved playing piano but the family band needed a drummer, so Alice taught herself to play the drums. The “Carole Sutton Band” performed for many years at high schools, weddings and American Legions. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Perrysburg. Alice taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, was an elder, and a “Stephens Minister”. In retirement, Alice loved surrounding herself with her children, grandchildren and great grandchild. She loved to travel, play piano, go to church, walk and take rides along the river. She began each day reading her “daily devotional”. Alice was preceded in death by her husband John and parents Lawrence and Ruth Sutton. She is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law: Jon and Martha Hummel of Perrysburg and David and Deb Hummel of Shiloh, Illinois; one daughter and son-in-law: Joy and David Dunnie of Tulsa, Oklahoma; six grandchildren: Nancy, Elizabeth, Katherine, Mary, Austin and Lindsay; great-granddaughter Brooke; two sisters; Marion Trettin of Bowling Green, Ohio and Carole Gutierrez of Houston, Texas. Alice will always be remembered as a kind and loving mother and sister, respected and loved by family and friends with a strong Christian faith. She will truly be missed. Appreciation is given to Hospice of Northwest Ohio and the nursing professionals at Eleanor Jennings Adult Family Home in Rossford, Ohio. The compassionate care given by Julie Cuprys, Gerri Pittman, Jennifer Ollom, Jane Reiter and Connie Yenrick was exceptional. Their efforts made Alice’s transition peaceful. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Alice may be given to Eleanor Jennings Adult Family Home or Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Visitation will be Friday, January 6th from 4 pm to 8 pm at the Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 222 E.S. Boundary St., Perrysburg, Ohio (419-874-3133) where funeral services will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, January 7th, 2011. Burial will follow at Fort Meigs Union Cemetery.
