This Friday, January 8, 2016 a memorial celebration will be held for Alice Virginia Cunningham (nee Applegate), who died December 13, 2015 at age 96. She died as she had lived—gently and graciously. Alice spent most of her thirty-year teaching career in the Toledo Public School system at Birmingham Grade School lovingly leading kindergartners and first graders into the joy of reading and the excitement of learning. She was a lifelong reader and, thanks to her, so are her children and grandchildren. Alice’s favorite book was the Bible. She was a member of at least one Bible study her entire adult life. At one time she belonged to three Bible study groups, two of which she led. Her faith in God sustained her in the 39 years following the death of her husband, Eugene Cunningham. Even during the last days of her life, Alice gave her love to her family, friends, and caregivers. They will remember her million-dollar smile, her arms outstretched for a hug, and her unfailing sweetness. She will be treasured and missed especially by her children and their spouses, Spencer Cunningham (Dru), Kathy Woodward (Marc), and Rob Cunningham (Barb); grandchildren Julie Levine, Jenny, Anika, and Kristoff (Kate) Cunningham, and Ian Woodward; and her great-grandchildren Ethan, Otto and Ancil Cunningham, and Carys Levine. Many thanks to the warm, caring staff at Kingston of Perrysburg and to Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their loving ministry to Alice and to her family. The Memorial Celebration will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 8, 2016 at Riverpoint Ministries United Methodist Church located at 2862 131st Street, Toledo, Ohio. Contributions in Alice’s memory may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements were entrusted to Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, Perrysburg (419-874-3133).
