Alice M. Croy

October 26, 1926 — October 14, 2017

Alice (Verhoff) Croy, 90, of Perrysburg, passed away Saturday, October 14, 2017 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to many. She was born on October 26, 1926 in Kalida, Ohio to August and Nora (Wesbeld) Verhoff. She was one of eight siblings raised on a farm in a tight knit family. Alice graduated in a class of twenty-five from Kalida High School; during WWII, she worked in Lima, Ohio at a Western Union relaying information to families of service members. Alice lived with a group of women who became life-long friends. This experience gave Alice a sense of independence that she would display in a variety of ways throughout her life. In 1945 she met Bob “Chic” Croy and their worlds collided at a dance club and after a courtship, they married in 1946. Soon thereafter, they moved to Toledo to seek their fortune, where their first son Larry was born. In 1950, Chic and Alice moved to Perrysburg where their son, Randy and daughter, Laura were born. Jointly, they owned and managed Putnam Farms, an egg wholesale enterprise. They spent much of their free time camping with family and friends; and later enjoyed their weekends and holidays with family and close friends at their cottage on the Maumee River near Napoleon. After Chic’s death in 1989, Alice began a career as a bookkeeper at a variety of businesses in Perrysburg including Harriet’s Dress Shop and The Ribbonry. Throughout her residency in Perrysburg, Alice was active in a variety of functions as a member of St. Rose Parish and became involved with a local performance group, The Suburban Singers. As a volunteer, Alice was exceptional. She was a charter member of the St. Rose Church Consolation Ministry, volunteered with the NW Ohio Prison Ministry since 2004 and at St. Clare Commons in Perrysburg for the past four years. She also was a member of the Helping Hands of St. Louis Kitchen feeding the homeless. Alice was especially effective in working with inmates at the Allen State Correctional Institution and working with elementary school children in teaching religious educational classes at St. Rose. Alice is survived by her sons, Larry (Luann) and Randy (Nancy), daughter Laura (Dave) Wott; five grandchildren, Alicia Hanlon, Mark Croy, Gina McClellan, Lacey Croy and Renee Wott; seven great grandchildren; sisters, Martha Ann Berheide and Dorothy VonderEmbse and brother, Wilbur Verhoff. Alice is remembered by family and friends as a woman of deep faith with a zest for life and devoted love of family. She will be deeply missed by her family and many friends. Her lifetime of service to those in need will be her gift and legacy to her family, friends and the community. Friends will be received Thursday, October 19, 2017 from 2-8 P.M. at Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 222 E. South Boundary Street, Perrysburg (419-874-3133) where a Scripture Service will be held at 7 P.M. On Friday, October 20, 2017 a Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 A.M. at St. Rose Catholic Church, 215 E. Front Street, Perrysburg, Ohio 43551. Burial will follow in Fort Meigs Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the NW Ohio Prison Ministry or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
