Aleta Nell Abbott, 85, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away to be united with her beloved husband on February 18, 2023, while surrounded by her dearest family. She was born in Milburn, Kentucky to her late parents, Alvin and Erma Bugg, in the middle of three sisters. After graduating from DeVilbiss High School in 1955, Aleta met her would-be husband while working at the Big Bear department store where he was a cigarette salesman. Shortly after meeting in 1959, the two had their first date at the Elbo Room and quickly became a couple. Marrying in 1961, the pair raised two sons and held them in the highest regard. Being a mother and grandmother were two of Aleta’s proudest accomplishments, and she had a special place in her heart for her grandson who she helped raise.
Aleta loved her husband dearly and they shared 23 years of marriage together before his passing in 1984. Following her loss, she found peace in remembering him by always keeping their memories alive by telling stories. Her Catholic faith was integral to her, and she was a lifelong parishioner at Blessed Sacrament in Toledo. Aleta also found joy in homemaking and was known for hosting most every holiday, especially Thanksgiving, with her famous cornbread dressing. She loved to travel with her family, especially to Ft. Myers Beach, FL, where they would vacation with her lifelong best friend, Peggy. Their two families became very close and the trip was looked forward to every year. Her family also took weeklong trips to Boyne, MI, skiing and making tons of memories. Later in life, she enjoyed road tripping with her sister Ellen and dear friend, Cynthia. She wouldn’t miss a weekly hair appointment where she caught up with her good friend and hairdresser for 38 years, Mary Jo. When at home, Aleta could be found knitting afghans, quilting, solving puzzles, doing crafts, or simply rocking in her rocking chair. She also liked soap operas with Young and Restless being her favorite. She had quite a sense of humor and always kept tabs on the neighborhood news. She loved all animals, most especially birdwatching in her front yard, and ladybugs were special to her—inspiring her only tattoo.
Known as “Letabugg”, “Mamaw”, and “Aunt Edie”, Aleta was classy, caring, and selfless. Above all, she was the best mom anyone could ask for and will be missed tremendously by her friends and family.
Surviving are her sons, Dale Abbott (Sarah Salvatori), Philip (Melissa) Abbott; grandson, Dylan Abbott (Ange); great granddaughter, Shaelynn; best friend, Peggy Gallock; her beloved granddogs, Carley, Russell; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Basil Abbott; sisters, Ellen Felgner, Rudy Bugg Stewart; cousins, Georgetta, Sylvia; aunt, Elizabeth.
Guests will be received for visitation at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W Sylvania Avenue, Toledo, on Friday, February 24, 2023, from 3-8 p.m. Her funeral Mass will follow at Most Blessed Sacrament Parish, 2240 Castlewood Dr., Toledo, on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at 1 p.m. Interment will follow.
