Albert “Al” Henry Tettau Jr., 80, of Oak Harbor, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on June 10, 2025. Born on December 18, 1944, in Port Clinton, Ohio, Al was the son of the late Albert Henry Tettau Sr. and Bernieta (Floro) Tettau.
A proud veteran, Al served his country honorably in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, returning home in 1967. After his service, he began a long and dedicated career at Brush Wellman (now Materion), where he worked in wastewater treatment for 38 years until his retirement.
On April 10, 1981, Al married the love of his life, Lela (Whiting), and together they built a life full of laughter, love, and cherished memories. Al had a heart for his community and especially enjoyed volunteering at local school track meets, often seen helping at the shot put and discus pits. He was also a friendly and familiar face at the Burger Barn during Oak Harbor High School football games.
Al was an avid sports fan who passionately cheered on the Cleveland Indians, Browns, Cavaliers, and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He also had a love for cooking and was known for preparing everyone’s favorite dishes—especially his famous sandwich spread.
Above all, Al was a devoted family man. He never missed a chance to support his grandchildren, proudly attending their sporting events and activities.
Al is survived by his beloved wife, Lela; his sons, Russell Newman (Corie Goodman), Craig Newman (Heather Knepp), and Richard Tettau (Diane Simmons); his daughter, Diana Lundy; six granddaughters; three grandsons; two great-granddaughters; and his sister, Carolyn Tettau. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Leona Toni Bahnsen; and his brother, Richard Tettau.
Per Al’s wishes, services will be private. In lieu of services, memorial donations may be made to Flag City Honor Flight, an organization that held a special place in Al’s heart.
