Albert J. Sprenger

November 7, 1937 — December 12, 2025

On December 12, 2025, Albert J. Sprenger, Sr., 88, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. He was born in Toledo, Ohio to George and Loretta Sprenger on November 7, 1937. The second of five boys, Al graduated from Central Catholic High School and attended the University of Dayton.

He began his career in the 7th grade working with his father, his Uncle Fred and his brother Tom at Sprenger's Mens Stores. In 1960, Al joined the U.S. Army Reserve and served in the Ohio National Guard, being honorably discharged as a 1ª Lieutenant after 8 years. In 1965, he followed in his family's entrepreneurial footsteps and founded an employment agency called Imperial Placement Services, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 2006.

Al was very dedicated to his Catholic faith and was an active member of Gesu Church throughout his life up until 2006 when he moved to Catawba Island, OH and joined St. Joseph's in Marblehead, OH. He was one of the original members of the Baker's Dozen in Toledo and a longtime member of the Toledo Club and of Catawba Island Club. He loved Lake Erie, and his passions were boating, fishing and flying. After a life-long fascination with airplanes, at the age of 59, he trained and earned his private pilot's license.

Born with the gift of joy, he never met a stranger and greeted everyone as friends. He was recognized for his kindness, warm smile, contagious laugh and inability to recall people's names, often including his own children. Al and his four brothers loved to get together and tell funny, loud, creative stories and jokes that the family will always remember. He was referred to by many as "Big City" or as "the Mayor of Madison Avenue." His grandchildren called him "Papa" and his great grandchildren called him "Papa City."

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Marcia Gallagher. His 4 children, Kathleen (George) Hack, John (Katherine), Loretta (Jeff) Coil and Albert Jr. (Stephanie), his 13 grandchildren, RJ (Nicole) Coil, Elizabeth Coil, Tommy Coil, Brian (Karissa) Hack, Kevin Hack, Sarah Hack, Rachel Hack, Bonnie Sprenger, John Sprenger Jr., Ned Sprenger, Tony (Angie) Haberkorn, Alexis (Bee) Gibson, and Josh Almo. His 4 great-grandchildren Allie, Liam, Sophia, and Albert Joseph (AJ) and his brothers Tom (Patricia), Patrick, George "Fritz" (Mary Ellen) and Mark (Nancy) Sprenger.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at Gesu Catholic Church, 2049 Parkside Boulevard, Toledo, OH 43607 at 11 a.m. where the family will begin receiving friends at 10 a.m.
