Alan "Al" Lewis Mandeville, age 77, passed away peacefully at home on October 26, 2026, with his beloved wife, Linda, by his side.
Al was born on May 4, 1949, in Massillon, Ohio, to Douglas and Helen (Ziegelhofer) Mandeville. He graduated from Tuslaw High School and went on to attend the General Motors Institute on a scholarship, studying mechanical engineering. He applied his education and technical expertise to a successful career as a skilled metallurgist with General Motors, where he dedicated more than 40 years of service before retiring.
On July 27, 1974, Al married Linda Brown, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with shared experiences, family, and memories. He was a member of Chapel on the Lake and enjoyed staying active through golf and bowling. He participated in golf leagues at Sawmill Creek Golf Course and Thunderbird Hills Golf Courses and enjoyed bowling at Bonnie Lanes and Cedar Lanes. He was one of the last few remaining original members of the UAW 913 Thursday night league since it's inception at Bonnie Lanes in Sandusky in the early 1970s. He kept bowling up until April of this year. He inherited his love of golf, bowling and the Cleveland Browns from his father.
He enjoyed reading mystery, science fiction, thriller, and nonfiction books, with a particular interest in Civil War history. He loved the films RED, RED 2, Alien, and Aliens. He also enjoyed jazz music such as and guitarist Wes Montgomery and pianist Dave Brubeck, and the music of Linda Ronstadt, Judy Collins, and The Irish Rovers.
Al took pride in spending a great deal of time in his yard gardening, rearranging decorative rocks, collecting turtle and frog statues, and buying Linda a collection of gnomes throughout the years. He enjoyed his small koi pond he built with his son and feeding the birds and squirrels.
In his middle years, he coached soccer, and he took pride in attending his daughter's steel drum concerts during her college years and listening to his son play the saxophone. Al treasured the music of his youth, calling the 50s and 60s the greatest era of rock 'n roll, and was able to foster the same sentiment in both of his children.
Al is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda Mandeville; his daughter, Shawna Mandeville; his son, Ethan Mandeville; his sister, Julie (David) Girt; several nieces and nephews; and his cats, Danny and Dolly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Douglas and Helen Mandeville, and his sister, Susan (Eric) Nichols.
Al will be remembered for his dedication to his work, his intellectual curiosity, his silly pranks, his many interests, his strong faith in the Lord, and the lasting memories he created with his family and friends.
Friends and family are invited to gather on Friday, November 6, 2026, from 10:00 am until the time of Al's funeral service at 12:00 pm at Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home, 216 Washington Street, Port Clinton, Ohio 43452. Interment will follow at Catawba Island Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice in Al's memory.
