Agnes M. Opre

November 17, 1918 — August 26, 2012

Agnes Mary Dudash Opre passed away August 26th, 2012 and was called home by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ after more than 93 years of spreading love and kindness to her beloved family and many friends. The love of her life and husband of 62 years, Joe, passed away in October 2002 and Agnes often spoke of the joy that awaited them when they would be reunited in the presence of Christ. Her family is saddened by her death but deeply comforted knowing that Joe and his Aggie are forever together again. Agnes was born in United, PA. where she lived until the family, parents Michael and Mary, brother Steve and sisters Ann Saloff and Margaret Jacobs, moved to Toledo in 1926. She and Joe met while living on the East Side and were married in 1940. They had two sons, Joseph Michael Sue Stewart of Laguna Hills, CA. and James Edward Carmel Precario of Downers Grove, IL. Joe and Sue gave Agnes her grandsons, Michael, David and Brian Opre while Jim and Carmel presented her with granddaughters Elena Principe and beloved Francesca who tragically passed away in 2004. Agnes showered her love on all five of her grandchildren and was blessed to see and love all four of her great grandchildren. She also treated the family to countless fantastic meals from The Worlds Greatest Hungarian Kitchen which were enjoyed around the dining room table in her Old Orchard home. Whenever her sons would arrive to visit, she would have one of their favorite meals ready and usually topped off with her famous Hungarian nut roll or delicious handmade cookies. Agnes loved to play games with family and friends and was very competitive. In fact, in her younger days she was one of the best ping pong players in the family. From the White Street Bunco Club to board games and cards games with her grandchildren and lately her great grandchildren, she was out to win but then would take great pleasure in having one of the young ones get the better of her. Shed feign disappointment at losing but her huge, warm smile always gave her away. Agnes loved people, especially children, which made her an extremely popular employee of the Sears Infants Wear Department where she worked for nearly 30 years. In fact, many families would not allow themselves to be assisted by anyone but Mrs. Opre. Love was returned to Agnes in many ways and her family is especially grateful to her nephew and Godson Gerald Jacobs who managed her care and administered to her needs in ways that prolonged the quality of her life and the enjoyment of her beloved family for more than 10 years. We also wish to acknowledge the loving and highly professional care of Compassionate Daughters Home Care which went above and beyond for Agnes in so many ways. Agnes and Joe were lifelong members of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, early in the East Sides Birmingham neighborhood and then in Oregon where her funeral mass will be celebrated prior to burial alongside her husband in Calvary Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. where Wake Services will begin at 7 p.m. Then, Thursday 10 a.m. at St. Michaels, 4001 Navarre Avenue, the Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated for Agnes. Tributes in the form of contributions to St. Michaels will be greatly appreciated by the family. Agnes was the epitome of love, caring and selflessness and her family is blessed by her nearly 94 years on earth. While we grieve, we are at peace with the knowledge that she is at home with the Lord and that we will see her again.
