It is with a heavy heart that we announce the peaceful passing of Agnes Ann Heckman on April 1, 2026, at the remarkable age of 87.
She was born on November 3, 1938, in Tiffin, Ohio, to a humble, faith-driven, and loving family. From an early age, she learned the values of kindness, dedication, resilience, and generosity-lessons she carried throughout her life and passed on to others, becoming her lasting legacy.
A 1957 graduate of Calvert High School, Agnes continued to build that legacy through her incredible talents in artistry, creativity, beauty and leadership. She danced and performed in numerous plays, handmade her own clothing, and played multiple musical instruments. During her senior year, she was crowned the school's first Homecoming Queen. She was remembered not only for her beauty, but for her kindness and vibrant spirit, helping to pave the way for future ambassadors. In 2023, she was honored once again at halftime of the Homecoming football game, celebrating her reign alongside fellow Calvert Queens.
Following high school, Agnes continued her education at Mary Manse College, where she earned her two-year teaching certificate. She began her career at St. James Catholic School in Toledo. While working and starting her family, she went on to complete her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974. Over a career spanning more than 40 years in parochial education, she served as a librarian, religious educator, art teacher, and second-grade teacher before retiring in 2009.
To her family, she was a constant source of comfort, love, and positivity; always offering a listening ear. Her gentle yet steady guidance helped keep us on the right path and her sharp memory meant she never missed a celebration. Whether for a birthday, holiday, milestone-or simply "just because"-she made everyone feel special with a homemade card, a sign seen from the house window, a smile, or small thoughtful gift.
Agnes gave selflessly, never hesitating to share her time, talents, or belongings. She found deep joy in giving and never expected anything in return-often expressing her love through warm hugs, sweet treats, or a bit of money tucked into her handmade cards.
She was the most patient person who found great happiness in life's simple pleasures: baking, cooking at funeral luncheons, attending the many activities of her seven grandchildren, walking, and tending to her beloved garden.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Richard Dean Heckman. She is survived by her cherished children: Jim (Brandi) Heckman, Robert (Nikki) Heckman, Matthew Heckman, and Theresa (Robert) Szygenda; her sibling Mary (Bill) Kasuga; her beloved grandchildren Ashton and Ainsley Heckman, Grace & Evelyn Szygenda, and Cameron, Makayla, & Harper Heckman; as well as many extended family members.
Agnes' passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew her. Her patience and unwavering kindness will continue to inspire those she leaves behind as they carry forward her legacy of kindness, dedication, resilience, and generosity.
"The richest life is one spent loving family and leaving kindness behind."
