Rodney Mccarthy

Dr. Rodney William McCarthy, 72, of Holland, Ohio passed on Monday, May 3, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. Rodney was born to William Justin McCarthy and Margaret Spicer in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on November 5, 1948. Rodney received his undergraduate and medical degrees from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, all the while finding time to be captain of the McGill Redman hockey team. The family then moved to Boston, Massachusetts for his medical fellowship at Harvard University. Upon completion, the family then moved to Toledo, Ohio where Rod began his medical practice. He cared for his patients in the Toledo area for 42 years. He was an ophthalmologist, specializing in oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery. He was not just a practicing physician but also an educator, teaching summer programs for many years. Rodney was a passionate person with many varied interests and was always a positive force in the community. He engaged in countless community activities and helped to lead a resurgence of youth hockey in Toledo. Part of that resurgence included creating and coaching the Toledo Cherokee Hockey Organization, starting with a junior level team that went on to win the national championship in 1998. He was also an avid golfer and skeet shooter, a member of both the Inverness Club and Ottawa Skeet Club. Rod also loved photography, scuba diving, held an instrument rated pilot’s license and loved to travel around the world with his family and friends, often with his golf clubs in tow. Rodney is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Anne McCarthy; his children, Brian (Kali) McCarthy and Heather (Kurt) Drstvensek; his grandchildren, Stella McCarthy, Campbell McCarthy, Alex Drstvensek, and Margot Drstvensek; his sister, Helen (Terry) Sheehan; his nephew, Kevin (Miranda) Sheehan; his niece, Jennifer (Dan) Francis. Rodney is preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 6, 2021 from 4:00PM to 8:00PM at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Avenue, Toledo, Ohio 43623. Services will begin Friday, May 7, 2021 at 12:00PM, officiated by Dr. Stephen Swisher at Epworth United Methodist Church, 4855 West Central Avenue, Toledo, Ohio 43615. Box 351142, Toledo, OH 43635) The First Tee is a youth development organization in the greater Toledo area introducing the game of golf, and its inherent values to young people from all walks of life.
