Miriam D. “Mitzi” Gulau, 92, formerly of Catawba Island, OH passed away Thursday, August 24, 2023 at Memorial Hospital in Fremont, OH. She was born on May 12, 1931 in Oak Harbor, OH to Alexander and Agnes (Perry) Genzman. On May 16, 1953 at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church, Oak Harbor she married Donald H. Gulau, and he survives. Miriam worked with the Civilian Marksmanship Program at the National Match Support Detachment, Port Clinton, OH for 21 years. She was a longtime member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Catawba Island, and her family was one of the original twelve founding families of the church. Miriam sang in the choir and taught Sunday school there too. She was a member of the Elks Lodge in Port Clinton and volunteered at Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton.
Miriam enjoyed quilting, reading, playing the piano, and traveling. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Miriam enjoyed preparing holiday meals and dinner on Sundays for her family. She went out of her way to make the holidays special and sent notes and cards to family and friends that they will treasure forever.
In addition to her loving husband of over 70 years, Donald, Miriam is survived by her daughter, Kathy Lynn (Rod Schling) Wiechman, grandchildren, Alex H. Wiechman, great grandchildren, Charlie H. Wiechman, Callie R. Wiechman, and Carter L. Wiechman, special great granddaughter, Garina Minton, and siblings, Donna Baumer and Roger (Sherry) Genzman. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant son, Richard Wayne Gulau, son-in-law, Jerry Wiechman, and siblings, Virgil, Bertrand, Kenneth, Dale, and Velma Genzman.
Graveside services for Miriam will be conducted 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 9, 2023 at St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery, 541 Church Rd., Lakeside-Marblehead, OH. Memorial contributions in memory of Miriam may be given to Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary, Marblehead, OH or Resurrection Lutheran Church, Port Clinton, OH.
