John R. Barber, age 80, of Perrysburg, OH, passed away on June 11, 2018. A lively and loving husband, father and grandfather, and a true friend to so many, Jack was born in Toledo in 1937 to John and June (Bodeman) Barber. After graduating Woodward High School, he worked as a machine operator for Dana Corporation for thirty-four years. Following his retirement from Dana, he handled maintenance duties for Carranor Hunt and Polo Club in Perrysburg where he worked alongside the club chef and his wife of 60 years, Helen, and his grandson and fellow handyman, Kyle. Jack lived a full life. Among other pursuits, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, bowling, baseball and – when he could squeeze it in – an occasional visit to the casino. He had a lifelong love for all things automotive – especially Fords. Throughout his life Jack was always ready to lend a helping hand, especially to his children and grandchildren, whenever the need arose. He treasured his family and was uncompromising in his love and devotion for them. Gathering with them for a meal, a holiday or a trip to the ballpark was one of his greatest joys. He is survived by his loving wife, Helen Barber; daughter, Mary Beth (Mark) Vitou; son, John “Buddy” Barber; grandchildren, Marisa (Jesse) Hagen, James (Jennifer) Barber; Kyle Snowdy and Andrew Barber; great-grandchildren Alisa, Kayla and Olivia Barber, and Jesse Hagen; and his brother George (Mary Lou) Barber. Jack was preceded in death by his parents and his granddaughter, Amanda Snowdy. There will be a memorial service for Jack at Carranor Hunt and Polo Club, 502 E 2nd St, Perrysburg, OH 43551, this Thursday, June 14, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow. Those wishing to offer memorials for Jack are asked to consider making a contribution in his memory to the Toledo Area Humane Society, 827 Illinois Avenue, Maumee, OH 43537. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Witzler Shank Funeral Home, Perrysburg (419-874-3133). Jack’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Heartland of Waterville for their compassion and care for Jack over these last weeks.
