John E. Phalen, Jr., 80, of Ottawa Lake, MI passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at his home. He was born in Martins Ferry, OH to John and Luella (Applegarth) Phalen on November 21, 1943. John was a hardworking and dedicated man who passionately loved God and his family. He founded Phalen’s Floor Covering from his garage, and with his tremendous efforts, turned it into a large family-owned business. Family was John’s true passion; he would do anything for his children, grandchildren, and extended family members. He loved taking road trips and teaching life lessons along the way. He could always be found enjoying a 7 and 7 in the evenings and truly appreciated a well-manicured yard.
John is survived by his loving wife, Sharon (Furbee) Phalen; children, Troy (Teri) Phalen, Jeffrey Phalen, Tyson (Julie) Phalen; grandchildren, Zachary (Meghan) Phalen, Lexis “Lizzie” Phalen, Chase Phalen, Megan Phalen, Jake Phalen, Emily Phalen; sister, Candace Busdiecker (Wesley); nieces and nephews, Hailey (Tyler), Morgan, Justin (Isela), Katie (Elliott Sr.); great-nieces and great nephews, Jonathon, Nokomus, Connor, Andrea, Selma, Emilia, Jaxson, Maverick, Luella, Elliot “JR”; and countless beloved extended family members, friends, and customers. John was preceded in death by his parents, John Sr. and Luella Phalen as well as his brother Rusty Phalen.
Friends will be received on Monday, July 29, 2024, from 12 – 7 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Avenue, Toledo, OH. A Graveside Service will take place on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, what would be John and Sharon’s 58th Wedding Anniversary, beginning at 11 a.m. at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Those wishing to attend the Graveside Service are asked to meet at the cemetery near the Central Avenue gates. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in John’s name may be made to Tunnels to Towers Foundation.
