Joan Mary Hurrell

November 1, 1953 — December 19, 2022

Joan Mary Hurrell (née Bockey), 69, of Port Clinton, Ohio passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on Monday, December 19, 2022 at her residence after an 8-month battle with cancer. She was born on November 1, 1953 in Lima, Ohio, the daughter of the late Walter Edward and Anna Jean (Kroeger) Bockey. On October 12, 1974 she married George Hurrell and he survives.

Joan grew up in Delphos, Ohio and was raised on the family farm where she was the oldest girl of 11 children. She came to Port Clinton after marrying George, where they built their home and raised their children.

She graduated from St. John’s High School in Delphos, Ohio, then went to Bowling Green State University where she received her Bachelor of Science in Education and her Master’s Degree in Education. She was a 3rd grade teacher for the Oak Harbor School District in Oak Harbor, Ohio for 35 years. She was active in both the Port Clinton Music Boosters, where she was past president, and the Port Clinton Swim Boosters. She taught CCD at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Port Clinton.

After retirement she was very active with Friends of the Cemetery and with her walking group at the Port Clinton track. She adored her grandchildren, visiting Los Angeles whenever possible, even helping her grandson with Zoom school during COVID as she was forever a teacher. Some of her golden memories were trips to visit National Parks with her family. She was always spending time in her garden—it was her happy place. Most importantly, she was devoted to her family and loved spending time with them—she would check a suitcase full of books for her grandchildren on her frequent flights to L.A.

Survivors include her husband, George II; children, George III and Joanna Duquette; 2 grandchildren, Clive Warner and Beatrice Alice, and 8 siblings. She was preceded in death by her parents and 2 siblings.

Per Joan’s wishes, cremation has taken place with no visitation or services at this time. The family plans to hold a celebration of life on the Hurrell homestead in the summer of 2023.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of the Cemetery, 324 E. 11th Street, Port Clinton, Ohio 43452 or Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 414 Madison Street, Port Clinton, Ohio 43452. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.walkerfuneralhomes.com
