Janet S. Purney

Janet S. Purney, 84, passed away Friday, August 15, 2025 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 9, 1941 and was the 9th of 12 children born to Herman and Susan (Jensen) Oberhaus. Janet married James E. Purney on July 23, 1960 in Williston, Ohio. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage before he passed away October 2012.

She’s survived by her children: Cheryl (James) Binienda of Point Place, Scott (Amy) Purney of Fremont, Debra Purney of Pemberville, and Son-in-Law Mark Kolasinski of Northwood; grandchildren Courtney (Jesse) Miranda, Jimmy (Amanda) Binienda, Brittany Binienda (Josh Klein), Jeremy Purney, Ethan Johnson, Drew Pettiford, Emily (Jon) Meyers, Abigail (Jared) Wittler, Kyle (Whitney) Kolasinski, Bethanie Kolasinski (Josh Metroff), and Anabelle Purney. Janet has 16 great-grandchildren and is also survived by her brother Tom (Barb) Oberhaus. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and ten siblings.

Janet or “Granny” as she was known to nearly everyone who knew her, was a feisty, fun force of nature with a heart of gold. She loved spending time with family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She worked for many years at Luther Home of Mercy in Williston, Ohio. She babysat and helped raise countless children. Janet enjoyed a lifetime of planting flowers, yard work, sewing, crocheting, and knitting. She continued the Oberhaus tradition of knitting Christmas stockings by completing well over 50 for family members. Janet loved a good garage sale and shopping, especially with her best friend, Liz Zimmerman (passed 2010). In recent years, she loved watching PGA golf, OSU football, jigsaw puzzles, and word finds.

Visitation will be 2 – 8 pm Thursday, August 21, 2025, in Robinson-Walker Funeral Home, 501 West St., Genoa, Ohio. The funeral service will be conducted at 10 am, Friday, August 22, 2025, in the funeral home with interment in Clay Township Cemetery, 439 S Opfer-Lentz Rd, Genoa, Ohio. The family has suggested memorials to be made in her name to Hospice of NW Ohio.
