James Phillip Haggerty

December 11, 1931 — January 29, 2018

James P. Haggerty, age 86, passed away Monday, January 29, 2018. The son of Lionel and Marie (McCoy) Haggerty, he was born December 11, 1931 in Toledo, Ohio. He was a graduate of DeVilbiss High School and received his Bachelors in Business from the University of Toledo, where he met his beloved wife of over 60 years, Suzanne. Jim was a three-sport athlete at both DeVilbiss High School and University of Toledo, excelling in football, basketball, and baseball. After graduating, he began working for General Motors (GM) and his last position with GM was as a branch manager for GMAC. He was a successful businessman, who was highly respected by his employees. Jim enjoyed playing the banjo and guitar, especially with his best friend, Dave Sweeney. He continued to play sports later in life including tennis, and won the national senior tennis championship in Indianapolis, as well as numerous other tournaments, playing singles doubles. He also loved to garden. His most favorite activity was spending time with his beloved wife, Suzanne. Jim and Sue lived a true love story and it was only 60 days after her passing that he joined her on their next great journey. He was preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne; sisters, Lois, Trish and Dinty. He is survived by his children, Debbie (Bruce) Whitt, Jamie (Harry) Merrick, Tim (Shelia) Haggerty; 7 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. Family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 PM Saturday February 3 at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Avenue (west of Corey Road) with a celebration of Jims Life at 4:30 followed by a few of Jims favorite things, most especially Tony Packos. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the James P. Haggerty Memorial Scholarship Fund. Donations should be given to the University of Toledo Foundation, PO Box 586, Toledo, OH 43697, noting the James P. Haggerty Memorial Scholarship Fund.
