Dr. Daniel Mahoney, age 84, of Toledo, Ohio passed away on August 28, 2022, after a recent battle with cancer.
Born October 13, 1937, in Toledo to Dr. Eugene and Martha (Beutler) Mahoney, Dan was also raised in Toledo alongside his four siblings: Joanne, Jim, Marty, and Kathy. In 1956, he graduated from Central Catholic High School where he lettered in football and baseball. After high school, Dan attended the University of Toledo. In his years of undergrad, he was an active member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Dan pursued his dream of becoming a dentist as he went on to further his education at Case Western Reserve University. While in Cleveland, he met the love of his life Judith Ann Kuhn. The two joined in marriage on November 16, 1963. Dan graduated from CWRU in 1964.
Dan started his career in 1964 as a lieutenant in the United States Navy, serving until 1966. Dan continued his career in dentistry until 2002. Within this time, he cared for and serviced many patients within the West Toledo area. After retirement from Dentistry, Dan worked as a substitute teacher within the Toledo Public School district.
In his early years, Dan enjoyed bowling, playing softball, and spending time at his lake home. Wampler’s Lake was a joy and to be with Judy, the children, and the grandchildren made it seem like heaven on earth. He also had many fond memories traveling to different spots of the country with some of his closest friends. Up until his death, Dan maintained his closeness with his friends, as they met to play cards on Wednesday afternoons. Dan took pride in his euchre and bridge games. He hated to lose in these games, so he was given a nickname, “Doctor Good Loser”.
Above all things in life, Dan and Judy were most proud of their four children: Neal, Patty, Gene, and Jenny. Dan believed in tradition and looked for every opportunity to share his Irish heritage.
Dan was a member of Gesu Catholic Church and St. Joseph’s Irish Hills.
A special thank you to his home care nurse, Monica McKenzie, for her constant support.
Dan is survived by his wife, Judy Mahoney; his four children, Neal (Amy) Mahoney, Patricia (Dan) Hartnett, Eugene Mahoney, and Jennifer (Jason) Wampler; his eleven grandchildren, Dan, Kelsey, Mary, Neal, Connor, Allie, Emmie, Mallory, Grant, Matthew, and Jaelyn; great-grandchild, Carson; sister, Kathy Dever; brother-in-law, Dan, sister-in-law, Barb (Jim) Mahoney, and brother-in-law, Ron Kuhn.
Dan is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Eugene and Martha Mahoney; brothers, Jim and Marty; sister, Joanne; and brother-in-law, Don (Joanne) Jurek.
