CARL L. THORNTON Carl Thornton, 84, of Perrysburg, died April 28 at the Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Born in Perrysburg on January 1, 1933, Carl graduated from Perrysburg High School in 1951. He entered the Army in 1953, where he served in Korea for two years. After his service, in 1956, he met and married the love of his life, Martha Speck. They were married for 61 years. Carl followed in his family’s long-time lineage by becoming a fourth-generation certified bricklayer for 10 years before he joined the Perrysburg Police Department. Later he was hired by Chrysler Corporation in security at the Toledo Machining Plant, eventually serving as Chief of security until he retired. He and Martha enjoyed traveling later in their lives and walked their neighborhood every day until this year. Carl was preceded in death by parents Walter and Rozzie (Slagle) Thornton, and son, Jeff Thornton. He is survived by his wife, Martha; son, Matt Thornton; daughter, Jenny Jones (John); grandchildren, Jason and Zach Jones; and sister, Joyce Early of Columbus. A private service and burial will be held on Wednesday, May 3, with a celebration of life for friends and family on Saturday, May 6, from 11:30 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. at Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 222 E. South Boundary Street, Perrysburg (419-874-3133).The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
